There will be no school in Jackson County on Friday, September 27, 2024. Severe weather including strong winds and heavy rain could cause power outages and treacherous travel for our buses. We want to do all we can to ensure the safety of all our students and staff.

September 15, 2024 Dear Jackson County Public Schools, The Safety of our students and staff is our priority at all times. School will be back in session on Monday, September 16, 2024. We have planned diligently in order to provide extra police presence and safety protocol in place for every school. We want all students, parents and staff to feel safe while we are in session. All schools will be functioning on soft lockdown. This means the following: • SRO will be in the building at all times. • Instruction and activities will proceed inside the school as usual. • There will be no outside recess or activities. • If you sign out a student, you will remain outside and the SRO or principal will bring you the book and then your child. • Extra police presence will be on grounds, on bus routes and at all practices and games. We want all to feel safe and ready to get back to some normalcy. We look forward to seeing everyone back to school tomorrow. If you have any questions or concerns about our return, please feel free to contact me at (606) 287-7181 or call your school. We would like to thank our local law enforcement for providing us with the extra police coverage. Sincerely, Renee Smith, Superintendent Jackson County Public Schools

Letter from Mrs. Smith regarding Tobacco-Free School Policy Dear Parents and Guardians: In an effort to allow all students, staff and community members the opportunity to have a tobacco free learning environment, Jackson County Public Schools approved a comprehensive tobacco-free school policy as outlined in House Bill 142. We have a district wide tobacco free policy which includes every school campus as well as athletic facilities. This is enforced at all times including school events and events after regular school hours, such as sporting events, etc. As a district, we appreciate your support implementing the policy. We have implemented this policy in an effort to create a healthy and positive learning environment, prevent tobacco use, and provide positive role modeling for students. Schools are a place where children develop lifelong behaviors, and we are committed to ensuring tobacco use in any form is not among those behaviors. We have installed signs about the policy throughout the school campus. We will also make regular announcements at school events to remind students and visitors of the policy and how it prohibits use of tobacco products, alternative nicotine products, or vapor at these events or on school property. There are many helpful resources for youth or adults in our community who use tobacco products and want to quit. Please visit My Life My Quit (https://ky.mylifemyquit.org/en-us/resources/parents-guardians/) to learn more about free quit support services available for youth and adults. The updated policy, link to the updated Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline as well as links to educational resources can be found on our Safe Schools Website at https://bit.ly/JCPSSafeSchools Thank you again for your continued support and we look forward to a great year!
