JCPS Receives Federal Funding for Student Chromebooks

chromebooksEarlier this school year, the Universal Service Administrative Co. (USAC) announced the Emergency Connectivity Fund Program (ECF).  One initiative of the ECF program is to provide funding for school districts to purchase devices for students so that they can sufficiently engage in online learning.  In August, Rhonda Thompson, District Technology Coordinator for Jackson County Public Schools requested funding for 1,450 student Chromebooks in the amount of $548,750.00.  On October 14th, the district received notification that the request was funded in full.  The ECF funding will allow JCPS to replace aging Chromebooks (G4 and G5 models) that are ending their ability to update and run the needed online programs used by the district.  The district will also be providing Kindergarten students with a touch Chromebook that will be more user friendly for that age group.  The district began receiving the Generation 8 Chromebooks on Tuesday, October 19th.  The district is very fortunate to have received the devices in such a timely manner; the technology staff will be busy in the upcoming weeks getting the devices ready for student use.

Test-to-Stay FAQ

📌Do I have to participate? No, this is optional and if you are not 18 we will need parent/guardian permission.

📌What happens if I can't test 5 days in a row? If you can't test 5 consecutive school days you will need to finish your quarantine at home. If you start testing on Friday then you would test on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the following week.

📌Can I ride the bus to be tested? No, you must be transported by your parents or drive yourself.

📌Where will this testing occur? We will test between 8-9 each morning. Students or parents will circle the building and park between the fence/football locker room. Our nurse will test students while they are in the car. The results will take about 15 minutes.

📌If I choose to opt out of the test-to-stay program and quarantine instead, can I come be tested on day 6 and return to school that day with a negative test? Yes, the school nurse will be able to administer that test on day 6 following the same procedures mentioned above.

Indoor/Outdoor Guidelines for Sports

🔴🔵Indoor/Outdoor Guidelines for Sports🔵🔴

We are excited for our student-athletes to have the opportunity to play sports this fall. During indoor sporting events masks will be required for coaches, spectators, and all table personnel. We would also ask that you social distance as much as possible.

Outdoor sporting events will not require masks.  We would ask that you social distance as much as possible.  There is an abundance of lawn chair seating available at our football field.

One of the most important things you can do is if you have a fever, cough, or any COVID-19 symptom please stay at home.  This is also true if you've been exposed to someone who has COVID-19.

We will sell tickets at the gate and we ask that you follow these guidelines. Our students need the opportunity for as many normal experiences as possible. Thank you for supporting our students.

Mr. Harris
