Mercedes Hudson and Andrea Gabbard, both freshmen at Lindsey Wilson College, came to speak to eighth graders during their life skills class.  Mercedes and Andrea discussed the importance of taking challenging classes in high school, visiting colleges before you decide where you want  to go, and applying for scholarships.  They also discussed the challenges and successes of their first semester at Lindsey Wilson.

Tori Stephens, a sophomore at Berea College and a dance minor, came to speak to PE classes on the importance of diet, sleep, and stretching.  She took students through some stretches  and used student movement to help choreograph a short dance in each class.

Starting in the sixth grade, your student works with a program called an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).  It can be accessed through the Career Cruising link on the left hand side of this webpage.  On their ILPs students begin by exploring their interests and possible careers that match their interests.  They also have the chance to explore different colleges and to start compiling information for a resume.  Parents can access their student’s ILP by obtaining their parent/guardian name and password from Loretta Rose  or Linda Potter  (both at ext. 139) or Grace McKenzie (ext. 159).  Exploring your student’s ILP can be helpful in starting conversations about their future and you can send a note to the teacher who works with them on their ILP through this tool.  If you need any assistance navigating this tool, please contact any of the three staff members listed above.

On December 10th 2011, the Jackson County Middle School Dance Team was able to attend the Big Blue Challenge at North Laurel High School.  The team was able to bring back a 1st place trophy in large pom division.  Thirteen members were able to perform in front of several different teams and were able to see what competition is all about.  The competition was a new experience for most of the team.  They seem to enjoy themselves.  I hope that they continue to be able to put their best foot forward as I know they want to.  The Dance Team will be having a dance camp sometime in March, so be looking for better things to come!

“I am so proud of each and every one of you!” –Heather Clark
